I absolutely loved this. What a fantastic idea, even though the creepy pedo Sheppard was incredibly disturbing. Rodney's reaction to him was so moving. I'm guessing he did put that Sheppard out of his misery.

Also I'd pay money to read this fic: The third jump was to a reality where Sheppard was a drunk auto mechanic and had never met Merry McKay, who was the fourth wealthiest woman in the world. Rodney spent four days trying to find a way to get them to meet.

That would be a hoot.

Anyway, great fic. Loved the premise, adored your style and I'm so glad Rodney finally meets his John. Are you thinking of continuing this though? I'd love to read about them actually getting together.

Wow, thank you! I had more in there about Merry and drunk!John, but took it out for smoother reading. I think they do eventually meet up.

I like to think that after the hard lives they've lived, most Sheppards and McKays find each other.

Oh. This turned out beautifully. I'm gonna say it again: This was fantastic. I was dubious when you said you were ending it there but I love how you gave this last Sheppard some more play time. It's perfect!

Now write porn please, thank you. ;)

Yeah - I have no idea what happened in the middle there either. *shrug* I am helpless in the face of my plot bunnies.

This was a great twisty story, with all sorts of what-ifs and if-onlys. Your imagination deserves cookies for coming up with all the scenarios! I really enjoyed this, especially the hopeful ending.

Thank you very much! I'm glad the ending came off as hopeful. I worried about that.

Thank you very much! There will probably be a mini-sequel.

I have the start of a lot of explanation and sex and Chinese food that I didn't have time to write the other 5000 words for, so that's likely to show up in a little while.

Oh, this was so wonderful. :)
The ending! I have a big, stupid grin on my face now. (which is nice because it replaces the 'oh, god, no' look I had while reading the killer!sheppard part)
Really terrific all around. :D

Ooo what an interesting look Vegas.

Okay, killer John broke my heart. Highland McKays...too funny. I knew I saw a wedding ring on Vegas McKay. I like all the different versions of John and Rodney and their relationship. I hope 117 is the right one.

He is, 117 is definitely the right one.

I'm glad the Highland McKay's amused you - they made me laugh too!

You sure did see a wedding ring. I went back to make sure. I'm sure it was David's (I believe it was filmed not too long after his wedding), but I just had to twist it a bit. I'm not giving in to the McKeller that easily.

Fascinating and wonderful. There are so many things I like about this story. I like AUs, generally, but my favorites are the S/F style like this, where the AUs are related to the original by more than the characters.

I just loved Rodney's search; the statistics, and the journal, and the speadsheets. That was my favorite part I think, imagining Rodney on a quest, keeping scientific track of what he sees along the way.

I'm interested in the choices that you made for your Rodney... that he's bi-sexual but has never had sex with a man. I like it that this Rodney wasn't in a relationship with his Sheppard. I find AUs where Rodney is looking for a replacement for a husband-type Sheppard to be disturbing and sad. But, your Rodney seems sure that he's looking for a gay Sheppard to love. It makes me wonder why they hadn't been in a relationship in his original universe. Also, I wonder if Rodney set out looking for Sheppard his-best-friend-and-vitally-important-person, and then realized through his journey that he was really looking for the love of his life, and then changed his search parameters. I also wonder if Rodney had considered looking for a female Sheppard to love, he sounded a bit too unconcerned about the sexual aspect -- "it's sex, how bad can it be?" -- but maybe after meeting so many Sheppards the sex seemed a lot less important than the relationship.

I think my favorite line was, "I'm not a good enough Sheppard". I really laughed at that. It's perfect for an AU story.

I loved the glimpses of the different Rodney's. I wish Rodney had been more interested in himself so we could have more stories about the other hims.

Also, I was wondering about the original universe. Were there other things wrong with it that made Rodney so ready to leave? He seemed not to miss anything. I don't think "our" Rodney would do that.

If only tptb had decided that this should be the story for their new Stargate show. I would watch this every week, Rooting for Rodney to find a Sheppard that's right for him.

I would love to read more about this multi-verse. In the meantime I'm putting this in my memories.

Wow, what a thoughtful comment! Very good points you've brought up, let me see if I can address them (which should have happened in the text, so I have fallen down a little on that part, please forgive me).

So I have this huge answer to this, I hope you don't mind me blathering. In my mind, this is what happened to Rodney, and how he has organized it in his mind and made his decision: Sheppard is gone. It's not his fault, but it's not something he can fix either. He becomes unhappy, doesn't grieve properly, is something of a mess. Add onto this something I didn't tell you (and I don't even know why), but he's met like, seven or eight Sheppards before he loses his. They just keep coming to his reality, like there's an expressway or something. But their Rodneys keep bringing them back. So he figures there's something about his connection with Sheppard, and when he gets the chance to work on this like a probability problem, he does it. They don't need him in his Atlantis anymore anyway (I think between his painful unfinished grieving for Sheppard and his withdrawal from the few people in Atlantis who cared for him, he's just... ready to go).

So, as he meets these Sheppards (and starts to see how things tend to work between them), he starts to consider the fact that maybe there's something bigger at work here, that there is, in fact, something akin to destiny going on. As the numbers rack up, he realizes that he's not just running the numbers, he's looking for something.

Then, the messy part begins. As he starts to realize that he loves his Sheppard (still, yes), and that perhaps, if he had had the chance, he might have chosen to have a relationship with John, he wonders if there is another Sheppard out there who needs him. Whom he might have a relationship with. He decides he's fine with friendship, or he'd be fine with an intimate relationship, and that whether Sheppard is a woman or a man matters less than whether or not he thinks they can share a meaningful relationship.

He thinks about it a while and figures that he could find the male Sheppard attractive. It doesn't take much to leap from there to sex (which he honestly figures he can learn - seriously, how hard can it be?). And once he realizes that, he now labels himself bisexual, even though he doesn't have any practical experience.

Whew. Does that even remotely answer your questions?

Thank you so much for such a thoughtful comment!

Oh, I liked this, a lot. Nice integration of the two episodes--very logical, and I haven't seen anyone else make that connection!

I hope this is *the* Sheppard for Rodney. A Rodney needs his John!
